“WE’VE LEARNED THAT QUIET ISN’T
ALWAYS PEACE”
In poetry we explored Amanda Gorman’s poem, “The Hill We Climb” at the 2021 presidential inaugural. The question is, What do you think the relationship between poetry and politics should be and what do you think Gorman herself feels about this question?
I believe that poetry, which is like any other art, is used for expression. When we use expression in politics then it helps us connect with our mistakes and accomplishments. Amanda Gorman uses her poem to bring Americans united and together.
WE WILL NOT MARCH BACK TO WHAT WAS BUT MOVE TO WHAT SHALL BE, A
COUNTRY THAT IS BRUISED BUT WHOLE, BENEVOLENCE BUT BOLD, FIERCE AND FREE.
-Amanda Gorman
She is honest about how America has been bruised and gone through hard times but we must pick ourselves up and continue on because if we are together we are bold, fierce, and free. In order to create a better future and to live in our society we must continue and let the past be in the past but take the impact from the past and push it towards a better future.
WE CLOSE THE DIVIDE BECAUSE WE KNOW TO PUT OUR FUTURE FIRST WE
MUST FIRST PUT OUR DIFFERENCES ASIDE. WE LAY DOWN OUR ARMS SO WE CAN
REACH OUT OUR ARMS TO ONE ANOTHER.
-Amanda Gorman
Politics is supposed to be about uniting and being a better society. Amanda Gorman expresses that we must put our differences aside and reach out to each other to help unite and bring a better future. I think that Amanda Gorman thinks that the relationship between politics and poetry should be strong and united because it is her way of expressing her freedom of speech and also motivating/connecting to Americans in a passionate uniting way instead of constantly seeing two side argue.
