This poem that is found in the video game Fallout 3 is one of the most creative ways to engage people in poetry. The game fallout is mainly about a post apocalyptic world and the aftermath of a nuclear war. The fallout world also has a retro-technology world which is why this “robot” is reciting the poem. The poem is called “There Will Come Soft Rain” which was originally written by Sara Teasdale in 1918 (around WWI) speaking on anti-war. Another story that also follows the fallout is the story of There Will Come Soft Rain which is by Ray Bradbury in 1950 following the story of this robot. This story/poem was written in the nineteenth century and wasn’t originally a performed poet and bringing it into this post-war game brings it back into the light. The robot who performs the poetry is taking care of a house that no longer has its owners and the house is still weathering away from nature which shows that the robot is living this poems story. I think this is a very interesting and expanding way to get kids and people engaged in poetry without even knowing it and fallout uses this poem perfectly to get their story across. Video-games in itself can be very poetic and it makes sense to add in poetry to advance a deeper story and make other feel connected to the game. Even though the Fallout world is fantasy it still adds in real world elements that connects the audience.
