I enjoyed watching Battle Royal because it reminded me of a few anime where kids fight each other for the “greater good.” However, there was a recurring theme that I noticed. It was one of generations. Because the elder generation desired to maintain power, the younger generation was placed in a life-or-death position. According to Arai’s article, “Killing Kids: Recession and Survival in Twenty-First-Century Japan,” this topic is what made this film popular among younger generations worldwide. The claim that the younger generation is fighting control of programs that manage the population regardless of whether the country is in a period of boom or recession.
