Music and Time

The relationship between music and time is interesting I think. How one song or even lyric can be applied to such a specific time in someone’s life. For instance, I can vividly remember the song “Sports” by Beach Bunny playing in the middle of summer as I was in the car with my best friend at the time, and I can still feel exactly how I felt in that moment, but only for the span of the song. The drive back to my house earlier that year after I had just confessed my love for that same girl, I remember “Enchanted” by Taylor Swift blasting in my car as I had the biggest smile on my face. Even after meeting one of my closest college friends, I can still hear “Best Years” by 5SOS playing in my headphones. I think it is truly magical how songs can not only be associated with feelings but also the times in which we feel things.

Even experiences that I can barely seem to remember come back to me when I think of a song. Like a song that could have been playing in the background of a train station I was in during February of 2016. I don’t remember what was happening, but the song made me remember where I was at the time.

Without music, I truly believe I wouldn’t remember half of the events that have happened in my own life. Big or small, my experiences are shaped by the music that I listen to.
