Good heavens Luke Hemmings has really done it this time. Wow. This album truly encapsulates every feeling I think I am able to feel. It digs deep. I’m here to talk about one song in particular, however. “Slip Away”.
Having gone through heartbreak a few times in my life, this song hits deeper than the Titanic when it sunk to the bottom of the Atlantic. Hemming’s lyricism is beautiful and matches perfectly with the ambiance of the song/music itself. He begins singing, “falling, falling, falling in unfamiliar space…’cause I was drenched in you before I even knew your name.” These first few lyrics only could bring me to tears. They perfectly describe what it feels like to fall for someone before you even really know them. His first chorus makes an even greater impact on my heart. It goes…
Drowning out the fires
As I’m lying here awake
I can feel you slip away
Like I knew you would
Don’t you leave me in this silence
When you’ve seen all my mistakes
Now I’m looking for escapes
Like I knew I would
I can’t begin to explain the absolute emotion I felt when I first heard this. Somehow it takes the same effect time after time. The change in lyrics at the end of each stanza from you to I is riveting. How both sides of the relationship can be so disconnected yet they don’t know where to go with it. When you tell someone everything and trust them with your deepest emotions and feelings then they lose sight of what they fell in love with in the first place and “slip away”. Devastating. No other word could describe this song. In the best way possible, I have never felt such sorrow from a piece of music.
