To put it simply, One Direction was one of the most influential boy bands during their time. They were a movement. A revolution for teenage girls (and boys) all over the world. Some argue that one of their earliest singles “What Makes You Beautiful” is their best song, and others say it is their anthem “Steal My Girl”. However, both sides are wrong. It’s “Stockholm Syndrome”. This song is lined with straight serotonin. From the intro verse to the kick line to the chorus, everything about the song screams perfection.
The very concept of Stockholm Syndrome, which is defined as feelings of affection from a victim to their captor in a hostage situation, makes the entire song have a completely different meaning from the way it may sound at first. The audience listens to the intro lyrics, “who’s that shadow holding me hostage, I’ve been here for days…but I fear I’m getting used to being held by you…” and may not realize it at first, but they have a deeper meaning that goes beyond the surface. Although because the kick line and beat become so prominent in the chorus, those lyrics seem to be a secondary focus.
This song is quite genius because it grabs the attention of several audiences. Those who focus on the meaning and lyrics, and those who focus on the sound. All in all, “Stockholm Syndrome” is by far the band’s best song. No criticism will be taken.
