“Ghost of You” by 5 Seconds of Summer makes mentally ill women lose their minds

5 Seconds of Summer is an Australian band made up of four men, Luke Hemmings, Calum Hood, Ashton Irwin, and Michael Clifford. They became popular at the start of their careers with the hit single, “She Looks So Perfect”, and hit the charts with almost every other album they released from that point on. Though it is hard to pick just one song as a favorite, “Ghost of You” is definitely one of my top three.

Every aspect of this song screams heartbreak. As Hemmings sings, “So I drown it out, like I always do, dancing through our house, with the ghost of you…” listeners are taken into his own world of dismay. Then Hood begins, “too young, too dumb to know things like love…” I have never felt such emotion from a song like this one. Even the musicality is heartbreaking to listen to alone. The soft, mellow tone of the guitar, and the gut wrenching keys of the piano pull the song together. As we listen, it’s almost like we can feel the pure disarray that Hemmings was feeling and somehow relate the lyrics to our own experiences in life.

Truly, this song is like no other. It is a shame how few are aware of its existence. Stream “Youngblood” the album by 5 Seconds of Summer.
