Making a high-quality film is no easy feat. No one aspect of a film is more important than another. No one person who works on a film is more important to its overall success than another. Whether a film has billion dollar budget or is funded by sites like IndieGoGo, there are a few main characteristics that can make a film truly stand out.
Any great film must start with a great story. Whether you’re making a blockbuster for a major production company or your first feature film for a college class, a strong storyline should be the foundation of your film. Viewers want to form a strong connection with the characters in the film, whether that be love or hatred. The audience should walk away feeling some sort of connection to the film and that there was a “lesson learned.”
A great story must also include a great ending. All parts of the story deserve equal attention, dedication, and effort. Many films have met their demise because the audience wasn’t satisfied with the ending. While this doesn’t necessarily mean every movie has to have a cheesy “happy ending,” the viewer should feel some type of closure. Although it is okay to leave some of the ending up to interpretation, a good movie should give some type of direction for final scenes of the film.
To make a high quality film, you need high quality equipment. Although that might not be easily accessible for those creating lower-budget projects, it will help a film be more successful in the long run. Luckily, with the increasingly high-quality of mobile phone cameras, many new filmmakers are able to shoot a feature length film all on their phone. Although some may deem it super expensive to create a film, it has become more accessible in recent years.
According to an article by Third Space, a good movie should be re-watchable and sharable. If a movie can be watched multiple times over, without the viewer getting bored, it likely means the film is of a higher quality. More effort was likely put into the script, the production, and the editing.

Films that would qualify as “high-quality” would be movies in the Marvel franchise, which has been a huge success in Hollywood over the past decades. Although those films have massive budgets and star power, they all have a great story at their hearts. However, the 2017 indie film Call Me By Your Name also experienced major success and became commercially known. Though both examples may have had a larger budget than many other writers, directors, and producers will get, they still show that other characteristics are needed to make a film truly great.
