If you’re anything like me then you love a good snack too. When I hit the road for a vacation with my family or just when I go back home from college, I always stop to get a snack for the ride home, but it’s never anything good for me. Slim Jim, chips, a slice of pizza, candy, and pop are just a couple of my favorite gas station snacks. For this post, I will be finding out the alternative to those loved junk foods and find something that will keep you focused and feeling better on the road.
- Nuts/seeds- I don’t know about you, but I love eating almonds, cashews, and peanuts by the handful. Switching foods for a better option will help you in the long run. Blue almond on the go lightly salted almonds are my personal favorite as they are delicious and only 100 calories. If you’re looking for more of a sweet treat, try going for the skinny-dipped dark chocolate almonds instead of the candy bar you were going to get.
- Yogurt- I love yogurt with every fiber in my body. Yogurt is one of my safe options at any gas station, even though it may be kind of hard to eat while driving. Activia, Chobani. Oikos, Light and Fit are all good yogurts not only taste-wise but health-wise too.
- Eggs- I’m only halfway serious on this one. While eggs are delicious and high in protein, they may not be the best car snack. If you’re brave enough for this one good luck. From past experience, I have tried this snack once on a school trip on the bus safe to say the people around me may not have liked me at the time. – Same thing with tuna packets.
- Hummus- As I talked about in a later post hummus is such a good snack. I have heard from a group of people that hummus just isn’t for them but there are so many options and things to dip with that completely change the flavor of the snack.
- Fresh vegetables/fruits- If the gas station offers some good varieties of fresh produce it’s always a safe bet to go with. Eating an apple, banana, carrots, and celery is not only better for you than the gas station chips but they will make you feel much more energized and better during the day and drive.
- Beef jerky- Okay as a person who always went for a Slim Jim it’s still hard for me to pass them when I go to the gas station so over time I have found some alternatives. Country Archer Zero Sugar Classic Beef Jerky, Lorissa’s Kitchen Original Smoke Show, Stryve Biltong Original, Think Grass-Fed Beef Jerky, and CHOMPS Jerky (Original Beef Stick) are some good options to go with. Beef jerky is a good source of protein and a good snack (when eaten in moderation).
There are many other good snacks which I’m just going to rapid fire- Protein bars such as Quest bars, Protein snacks, Quest chips, rice cakes, almond butter packs, pork rinds, string cheese, popcorn such as skinny pop, That’s It Bars, Fairlife Core Power Protein Shake, Graham Crackers:
My main reason for writing this post is for students in college for not only when they go home but when they stop by Acre Provisions Marketplace, Xcetera, and Union Market. These places are packed with snacks that you will want to buy before going to class, studying, or just going back to your dorm so have restraint and live a healthier and happier lifestyle with just a few changes in your eating habit.
Beef jerky has always been a staple for me at the gas station. And if I’m the one driving on a road trip then planters nuts are a godsend. The thought of having the flakey, sticky, or just otherwise gross qualities that characterize junk food has always put me off of having it in my car. Wonder how much of the case that is for other people? I guess I end up eating healthier because I don’t want to get my car dirty lol.
I am going on a trip next weekend and will keep this in mind. I always gravitate towards the unhealthy snacks too, but I find that though they are good in the moment, they often make me feel worse while traveling. So, with a 10-hour drive in my near future, this was a great post to look into!
