W-5: False Perception of The American Dream

The False Interpretation of the American Dream

Many, since the birth of America’s independence, have believed that any individual can pursue anything they want as long as they put forth the effort in said respective area. However, as displayed many times throughout history, that is not the case. There are going to be many setbacks on nearly everyone’s path, sometimes they are going to have to defy the odds, and other times they are going to have to accept the fact that their dream may be unattainable given their situation or as a result of uncontrollable variables. However, I believe that no matter the given situation, there is always a right move and a wrong move – just like in a game of chess. Even though one dream may not be attainable, or certain circumstances prevent one from achieving it, does not mean all others are unattainable as well. When one door closes, another opens.

Is Anything Attainable by Anyone?

As briefly mentioned above, some dreams are going to be unattainable or unrealistic. For example, the chances of a 6-foot 5-inch male making it into the National Basketball Association are going to be better when compared to a male that is 5-foot tall. That said, it is not impossible for the shorter individual to make it, they will just have to work harder or maybe consider another specialty or dream to pursue. Other circumstances, such as economical or legal, play a role in one’s chances as well. These are all factors that need to be taken into consideration when making big choices in life.

This week’s blog post will set the tone for the posts to come. Each week, I will discuss individuals who have displayed resiliency to overcome adversity, defied the odds stacked against them, and accomplished their American Dream.
