When I read The Great Gatsby, one of the first things that stood out to me was how much the 1920s reminded me of today. The world back then was full of fast changes, big dreams, and people chasing money and fame. That sounds a lot like the 2020s. Even though it has been over a hundred years, the way people live, spend, and try to look successful has not really changed.
In the 1920s, America was booming after World War I. People were spending more, partying more, and living like there was no tomorrow. That same vibe came back in the early 2020s, especially after the pandemic. As soon as things started opening back up, people were eager to go out, travel, and post it all online. It reminded me of Gatsby’s parties. He threw huge events with tons of strangers just to get noticed. Now, people do the same on social media. It is all about being seen.
Another thing is how both time periods had big gaps between the rich and the poor. Gatsby made his money fast and tried to fit in with old money, but it never really worked. Today, people still chase that dream with things like crypto and influencers trying to get rich quick. But like Gatsby, not everyone finds the happiness they are hoping for.
In both the 1920s and the 2020s, it seems like people are searching for something more, but they are looking in all the wrong places.
