Background

Notes
The film is not subtle with its portrayals, however I believe this works in its favor as far as representation for dissociative identity disorder goes. It demonstrates struggles with work and interpersonal relationships which is common with mental diagnoses, and goes through the criteria of dissociative identity disorder without demonizing the protagonist for having the disorder. Rather than using very dramatic changes in order to signify switches, ANIQRSS chooses to use music to show the switches between each part that come about as a result of dissociative identity disorder. This also plays in its favor, as it doesn’t play into extremely common stereotype of dissociative identity disorder being overt or easily visualized from the outside. His therapist reassures him near the end of the film that it is okay to be afraid, but also that there is no evil alter inside of him, even though he is scared that such a thing will appear in him. Overall, I would recommend this film for representation on dissociative identity disorder because it provides some basic insight as to what it may appear like.
