When I hear The Great Gatsby, I often think about all of the glamour, flapper dresses and glitter. Personally, this book throws you into the middle of the roaring twenties era. This was an iconic time in society for everyone living it, people at least in the East and West egg felt like they were on top of the world. Of this time, fashion was iconic which they may have not known the impact it will have for generations.
Flapper dresses were the face of fashion as girls were wearing more freeing clothing, letting loose and dancing, along with cutting their hair. Jordan Baker and Daisy, I believe fit this vibe in their own ways. Jordan was her hair and more progressive lifestyle as where Daisy was her hair along with her fashion. These dresses aren’t just iconic because of the style but of what that meant for women. It stood for new lives and opportunities for women.
Before 20s fashion, the styles for women were very restrictive with corsets and layers, women were confined socially and physically. That’s when WW1 ended and women came out confident and wearing shorter skirts, sparkles, and flapper dresses. They had gained confidence, during the war when the men were fighting and the women had to keep businesses, and towns afloat. Women were no longer just trying to look good or be forced to wear a certain number of layers, they were there to showcase independence, and no toleration for the old fashion rules.
Overall flapper dresses and fashion of the 1920s shows the revolution and uproar women made to broaden their opportunities and experiences. This left an imprint for generations in my opinion.
