Although I always knew what it meant, I never truly understood the importance behind the “copyright”. After going through this class, I have learned how all types of journalism, personal writings posted to the public, and much more is only solidified as yours, if you get a copyright. According to Samra Akhlaq’s article, 15 Reasons Why Copyright Is Important | Curious Desire, she explains all the different benefits that having a copyright gives you, from owning whatever you put out there, to being able to make a profit on it. This is often an ethical issue in the media world, an unaware person puts content out for the world to see, doesn’t copyright it and ends up getting their material stolen by a source with a bigger following who ends up making a profit margin off of something that is stolen. At the beginning of this class, I didn’t see the issue with ethics and copyrights, now at the end, I see a massive problem that happens constantly in the United States specifically. I believe this is a solvable problem, the youth, with how smart they have become, have to start being educated on copyright infringement and how to get copyrights on their online work. If we teach kids to get copyrights, we won’t have to fight the constant ethical and legal battle of copyright problems.
