About the Sustainable URban Futures (SURF) Lab

The Sustainable URban Futures (SURF) Lab is led by Dr. Chenghao Wang and is in the School of Meteorology and the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability at the University of Oklahoma.


About the University of Oklahoma

Founded in 1890, the University of Oklahoma is a public research university located in Norman, Oklahoma just 20 mins. south of Oklahoma City, one of the top 50 metropolitan areas in the United States. The university is classified among “R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity” (Carnegie Classification).

OU’s Norman undergraduate population is slightly more than 20,000, giving students a major university experience in a private college atmosphere. With three campuses in Oklahoma, OU also offers study abroad opportunities at several locations and OU campuses overseas.

About the School of Meteorology

The School of Meteorology is the largest such program in the nation, with approximately 250 undergraduate and nearly 90 graduate students. The School is routinely ranked near the top of the nation in terms of undergraduate awards, such as the annual number of undergraduate scholarships awarded from the NOAA Hollings and American Meteorological Society (AMS) programs.

The School has established exchanges with the University of Reading in the UK, Monash University in Australia, and Hamburg University in Germany. Recent linkages have also been established with Kyoto University in Japan and Nanjing University in China.

The graduate program is selective with an admission process based on a holistic look at the applicant’s academic abilities and accomplishments, references, awards, research experience and fit to our research funding. Graduate Programs in the School of Meteorology include M.S. degree in Meteorology and Ph.D. degree in Meteorology.

About the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability

The Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability is a dynamic and growing department at the University of Oklahoma. The Department’s mission is to conduct innovative and socially relevant research; to expand students’ intellectual vistas via critical perspectives and valuable tools and skills; and to catalyze sustainable human-natural systems.

The Department has laboratories for physical geography, cartography, and remote sensing, and a maker space and studio for geo-humanities research. The Department also houses the Oklahoma Alliance for Geographic Education (OKAGE), an organization for geography educators in Oklahoma. Also associated with the Department are the Center for Spatial Analysis, the South Central Climate Science Center, and the Water-Energy-Food Institute (WEFI).

The Department offers several scholarships and awards which are used annually to recognize deserving students. Graduate Programs in the Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability include M.S. in Geography and Environmental Sustainability (Environmental Systems Track), M.S. in Geography and Environmental Sustainability (Geospatial Technologies Track), M.A. in Geography and Environmental Sustainability, Ph.D. in Geography and Environmental Sustainability, Online M.S. in Geospatial Technologies, and Graduate Certificate in Geospatial Technologies.
