How “Champagne Problems” by Taylor Swift relates to The Great Gatsby!

January 29, 2025 / Chloe Stubbs

What I want to talk about is the song by Taylor Swift called “Champagne Problems”, while It does not specifically say anything about the Great Gatsby, it has many similarities to how the book goes. The song has many similarities to the Great Gatsby, they both involve wealth, privilege, and love, they both have some characters that are stuck inside of a fantasy world of superficial things and they both talk about how they struggle to find a connection. In the song, Taylor sings about a rich young girl who has just about everything she could want materialistically but she still feels not fulfilled, but she’s engaged to a man from a wealthy family. In one of the lines of the song she sings “Love slipped beyond your reaches” and I think that depicts really well how Daisy feels about Gatsby because Daisy was more focused on the fun parts of their relationship and i’m not sure if she ever thought of how Gatsby thought of it as a real relationship and wanted to be with her but I think she was just mostly in it for the fun aspect. Daisy wasn’t interested in true love with Gatsby, she was more interested in wealth and status with Tom. Both the song and the Great Gatsby tell about how having money and wealth can be lonely and make you feel isolated because people could just want to be around you for the money and the fun, and not to have genuine friendship. In conclusion, both the song and the book talk about how love can be destructive, in “Champagne Problems” the women’s fiancé cannot commit to her fully which makes her heartbroken and alone, just like in “The Great Gatsby”, Gatsby loved Daisy and they had true love but Daisy stayed with her husband just because of his money and power, leaving Gatsby heartbroken and eventually dead.
