Inaccessible Cities

Today I will be reviewing inaccessible cities. Inaccessible Cities: An interactive web experience by AJ Contrast.

Inaccessible cities is telling a story about 3 disabled women–Rebecca, Olajumoke and Nidhi. The cities that they live in is not friendly when it comes to accessibility. The women tell your stories, and they also have an interactive map detailing just how long it takes to get around on an average day.

The website seems to be a group project–I count think women across the globe helping it out. It goes from New York to Lagos to Mumbai.

The interesting part about their website is that they don’t just want you to hear about how bad it is for people with disabilities across the globe, they want to SHOW you. The interactive map functions as sort of a simulator with multiple different scenarios and outcomes. The ‘Meet the women’ section is unique too! It tells their story, and then ties into the others, I.e. Rebecca couldn’t imagine living anywhere else other than New York City, so she can’t imagine what other places around the globe are like, hence a pop-up menu leading to Olajumoke and Nidhi and their respective countries/cities.

It was really easy to navigate and use the site, it really does feel like it is impossible to mess up! Everything was neat, nice-looking and simple. The color scheme was okay. I saw a lot of shades of blue and although I didn’t understand why, it didn’t hurt the site at all. The fonts looked really good for the site.

If there’s one thing I’d want to borrow for my page from this one, it would be the maps. The google maps specifically. I’m in an entrepreneurship class and I am in the process of setting up an LLC that sells wetsuits designed to detract sharks. Something like an interactive map showing where my business is located would be very nice to have!
