I have been reading the Great Gatsby but for the sake of time and also due to my interest in film I watched the 2013 movie. And after watching it I have a lot of opinions (mostly positive) in regards to the storytelling and filmmaking and how well it adapts the book to the screen. The movie is very much so stylistically 2013 meaning that many of the filmmaking tropes of that time are present such as during many of the party scenes they play dubstep and music of the time which definitely dates the movie. However I like it as it gives the film a unique feel to the style of the roaring 20’s. This 2013 style becomes less and less prominent as the film progresses as the story becomes more intense and without this shift to more direct less stylistic storytelling the plot takes center stage leaving the audience to feel the impact of the major events in the later parts of the story. Something else I noticed was in how the film was passed compared to the book as in the movie the first two chapters are covered in about ten minutes where compared to the later chapters of the book in the movie they take over double the amount of screen time witch shows the emphasis the director puts on the climax over the exposition. In conclusion I really like the film adaptation of The Great Gatsby even though it will definitely not last the test of time like the novel.
