Music is entrenched in my culture. From singing in the choir at St James COGIC church to dancing to “Beat It” by Michael Jackson in my third-grade talent show, I’ve always been connected to the melody. As I’ve grown older, I’ve started to discover my own personal love for different genres and styles of music. I’ve been through lots of underground genres as well as mainstream ones and I’ve found that I love Tyler the creator the most as an artist. It isn’t just his music that speaks to me, but it’s also how he promotes his work through all avenues. The imagery used in his advertisements for his signature fragrance makes me want to be drowned in it. The creativity put into his clothing campaign makes me feel as if wearing those designs would make me the coolest person in the world. When he performs “Runitup” from his latest album, Call Me If You Get Lost, it gives me the inspiration to chase all of my dreams and make them a reality. Tyler the creator has a way of telling a story through his entire persona. Whenever, I go into my professional field, I would like to have the same type of mindset that Tyler has. I want to be able to push a product, artist, company, or even athletic team to the public in a way that it is accessible and influential. He does an amazing job at selling himself. In finding my black identity, Tyler has been an influential figure throughout. Don’t take it from me though, simply go listen to one of his albums and experience it for yourself. I suggest you start with Flowerboy, as it’s his most accessible.
