My name is Daliang Ning. I am a research scientist in the Institute for Environmental Genomics (IEG), and the School of Biological Sciences, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK, USA, since June 2016. My current focus is on microbial ecology, particular mathematical ecology and community assembly mechanisms, in environment engineering and in response to global changes. My recent representative products include quantitative frameworks for community assembly mechanism research and global biodiversity of wastewater microbiome, published in Nature Communications, PNAS, and Nature Microbiology. Till Sep 14, 2024, I have published 96 peer-reviewed papers, which have been cited over 10,096 times by scientists from 125 countries. I am serving as a responsible editor for a SCI journal, Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering, and was a topic editor for Frontiers in Microbiology. I am currently a co-PI of two NSF collaborative projects, and won Highly Cited Researcher award in 2024 from Clarivate and OU’s Annual Award for Excellence in Research Grants in 2020 and 2021.
I enjoyed my young ages in a beautiful town, Taining, Fujian Province, in the southeast of China. Then, I spent thirteen years in Tsinghua University (Beijing), one of the best universities in China. I received Bachelor and Ph.D. and performed postdoctoral research in the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering (named School of Environment since January 2011) in Tsinghua University. During those years, I was fortunately supervised by Profs. Yi Qian (member of China Engineering Academy), Hui Wang, Hongyi Hu, and Xiaojian Zhang. My research covered broad topics including wastewater disinfection, persistent pollutant biodegradation in fungi, urban river remediation, health risk evaluation, and microbiome in urban river and forest soil. In September 2012, I came to IEG and began to focus on microbial ecology, following Prof. Jizhong Zhou, an eminent scientist and inspiring mentor. After four-year postdoctoral research, I became a research scientist to continue our exciting journey for mechanistic and predictive understanding of microbiome in this dramatically changing planet.
