Lush, released in 2018, is the first album from indie rock musician Lindsey Jordan, also known as Snail Mail.
The album is a dreamy, melancholy journey into the trials and tribulations of love, loss, and girlhood. Jordan’s voice screams over driving drums and electric guitar, with plenty of soft and sultry moments in between.
The album is incredibly cohesive, with each song creating a sonic thematic throughline. My personal favorites include the tracks “Pristine”, “Full Control”, and “Anytime”.
Before driving home one night my senior year of high school, I pulled into the parking lot of my old middle school. While I was driving home my mom called me and told me that my OU School of Dance audition results had just come in the mail, but she wanted me to open it myself. Sitting in the pitch black of the parking lot, I remember looking up at the sky. “Full Control” came on over the speakers and I just felt all the anxiety and self doubt washing over me.
I felt like my future was about to be decided for me, and everything about that song felt like an extension of what I was feeling. For me, Lush will always be a perfect reflection on the anxieties of growing up and figuring out how to love and be loved.
