Nothing Happens is the first studio album from indie-pop group Wallows. Released in March of 2019, this project is all about growing pains.
Wallows is a three member group including lead singer and guitarist Dylan Minnette, guitarist Braeden Lemasters, and drummer Cole Preston. You might know Dylan Minnette for his acting work as the main character in Netflix’s controversial series 13 Reasons Why.
Regardless, the group is an incredibly talented, funny trio of young California boys. Their sound has been compared to skate or surf music, with upbeat electric guitar and high energy drum beat. Nothing Happens is no exception, with many of the tracks exhibiting their classic indie sound.
Songs like “Treacherous Doctor” channel the frustration and confusion that comes with becoming an adult into sound. The song ends with a cacophony of noise, clanging and beeping interlaid over a frantic guitar. “Do Not Wait” mirrors this anxiety with an entirely different instrumentation. A droning electric guitar guides Minnette through a winding tribute to your childhood bedroom. Leaving a place that holds so many memories is a sentimental and heartbreaking part of growing up.
Nothing Happens is the perfect album for any angsty teen, and every listen brings back memories. Standout tracks include “Scrawny”, “Remember When”, and “Treacherous Doctor”.
