Heartstopper is a coming-of-age web comic and graphic novel series by Alice Oseman.
Heartstopper follows the story of Nick and Charlie, two British high school students as their friendship grows into a sweet teen romance.
When the two first meet, Charlie is a year younger than Nick and out at school and at home as gay while Nick is a straight “rugby lad”. As their friendship develops, Nick starts to come to terms with his bisexuality and formally comes out once the pair start dating.
The Heartstopper universe also hosts a fun cast of supporting characters, almost all of which are queer. They help Nick and Charlie navigate their relationship at every turn. All together, the ensemble makes for a perfect romantic comedy friend group.
Along with addressing homophobia and transphobia, the series also discusses a host of issues relevant to today’s teenagers including eating disorders, bullying, sexual assault, and inpacient treatment for mental health disorders.
The series is also getting a Netflix show! I am beyond excited to see this adorable, important story come to life on screen.
