Evaluation of Moneyball

The film Moneyball was able to effectively spread the messages across which was what the makers were attempting to do. Their main point was to tell the story of the 2002 Oakland Athletics and how a team of nobody’s turned into one of the most talked about teams in baseball history. They had other goals for sure and really wanted to make this film entertaining for everyone which caused them to change the story and leave some stuff out. Billy Beane’s assistant was inaccurately portrayed throughout this film. Beane’s real assistant’s name was Paul Deposta (Rice, 2022). Paul was inaccurately portrayed because he requested to not have his name used in the film at all which then caused them to remake the whole character. Also, most of the people inside of the Athletics organization actually supported Billy’s tactics and, in the film, they do not support or think it will work at all. The manager, who is the coach of a baseball team, also was against it in the film but then in real life welcomed the idea with open arms. The reason they did this was so that the film could have that underdog theme and feel to it. With adding that element to the film it was able to be appealing to every movie fan and not just baseball fans. It also was going on to tell the world of baseball that digging deeper to elevate a player can lead to major success. Instead of looking at the typical stats such as batting average, RBIS, and Runs scored there are more important numbers to look at. Beane’s assistant in the movie Peter Brand explains it best when he says “one should value a player by how many wins he creates for his team, and baseball games are won when teams score more runs than their opponents” (Miller, B. (2011). Moneyball. Columbia Pictures). That line is a good way of showing the exact point for the story and how the game of baseball was changed forever. This film did exactly what it was supposed to do and provided what it needed to for the audience watching it. The creators of this movie were able to spread the message that if you research hard enough and trust yourself then sometimes taking a risk is the right move for everyone involved.
