Great Gatbsy vs Self made Boys

The Great Gatsby and Self Made boys have many connections and many differences.

An example of a similarity is the use of the American Dream. In The Great Gatsby, Jay starts off as a poor boy who eventually moves to New York City and obtains wealth. We also see this in Self Made Boys, as Nick moves from Minnesota to New York in hopes of living a better and more successful life.

A difference that exists between the two is the use of queer identities. In The Great Gatsby, we do not see any of this, but in Self made boys, we see Nick and Jay are both transgender and this is particularly interesting because at the time this novel takes place, it was less a common thing for people to be transgender.

Both books are written around the idea of chasing a dream, for example, Gatsby spends the entirety of the novel building up his wealth and using it as a way to try and gain Daisy’s love back, and in Self Made Boys, Nick moves to New York in an attempt to better his life.

So overall, these two novels essentially paint the same picture, they are just on different paths and have different aspects to them but they tell the same story.
