The Color Green
The color green in The Great Gatsby serves as a symbol of hope and desire, as well as a symbol of wealth. We are able to see this as a symbol of hope and desire because of the green light at the end of Daisy’s Dock. It resembles Gatsby’s dream to be in a relationship with Daisy again. The Green light on Daisy’s dock reminds Gatsby of his hope and aspirations to be with her again and how he misses the relationship that he once had with her many years ago.
Green also resembles wealth in The Great Gatsby. It resembles the want for wealth that we are able to see in the novel. We are able to see this because they color green is often associated with wealth and money in American culture. Gatsby’s wealth allows him to through major parties in order to het Daisy’s attention, but this kind of material wealth doesn’t allow him to buy the more serious thing he wants, which is the love he has for Daisy.
We can also see green in a way that shows the decay during the time. The green light is able to highlight the conflict between idealism and hollowness that Gatsby possesses.
Instances where the green light is seen:
Chapter 1: We are able to see the green light in chapter one when it is brought up being at the end of Daisy Buchanan’s dock and Gatsby is able to see this light from his mansion across the bay.
Chapter 4: Nick brings green up when he talks about Gatsby’s obsession with Daisy and how he wishes he could be with her again.
Chapter 5: Green is brought up once again when we see that despite Gatsby’s very hard work, the light shows his desire for a relationship with Daisy, which not matter how hard he works, it is something that he will never have.
Chapter 9: Finally, we see the light one last time when green symbolizes the American Dream, resembling the hope for a better life.
Overall, green plays many significant roles in the Great Gatsby.
