Naff Asim – Maldives (Instagram live from November 10, 2020)

Naff Asim is a marine biologist and environmental conservationist from the Maldives working towards conserving and restoring the environment. Naff is currently working with the Blue Marine Foundation to establish a sustainable reef fishery program called “Laamaseelu Masveriya–Exemplary fisherman,” which will support research activities relevant to the development of protected areas in Laamu Atoll, Maldives. Naff has extensive wealth of information and experience from her previous role as a Sustainability Coordinator for Banyan Tree Maldives, and from working with organizations like the Maldives Marine Research Institute, UNDP, IUCN, and Six Senses Laamu.

Nisthu – Maldives (Instagram live from December 5, 2020)

Nisthu is a marine spatial analyst from the Maldives, currently employed by the Waitt Institute as the Site Manager for Noo Raajje Program, former lecturer at the Maldivian National University for the Bachelor of Environment Management program, and served as an exchange lecturer to the University of Milano-Bicocca in Milan, Italy. Nisthu is trained in the Geographical Information Systems and is experienced in the Maldivian Spatial Planning.

Afa Hussain – Maldives (Instagram live from December 21, 2020)

Afa Hussain is one of the main faces for the fight against the climate crisis in the Maldives. Afa is a sustainable development advocate and an environmental activist. She did her bachelors in Environmental Management, started her own movement (@beleaf.mv), and is currently working as an Environmental Analyst at the Minister of Environment of the Maldives.

Silvia Cantu – Mexico (Instagram live from January 10, 2021)

Silvia Cantu is a recent graduate from Middlebury College with a major in Political Science with a focus on Environmental Policy. Born and raised in Mexico, she has previously lived in Victoria, Canada, where she completed high school at UWC Pearson College and in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she attended Universidade Federal Fluminense for a semester of study abroad. She is fluent in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. She joined Peace Boat’s 100th global voyage traveling around the Patagonia as part of the Youth for the UN Sustainable Development Goals program in February 2019. She is also a Climate Reality Leader from the Fall 2020 training cohort. She has vast experience in interdisciplinary academic research, cross-cultural communication, and inclusive teaching. Silvia is also a certified PADI Advanced scuba diver and a conservation photographer with 6+ years of field experience. She hopes to develop a career focused on youth activism, marine conservation, and natural resource management in coastal areas.

Laura is a climate activist from Bogotá, Colombia who is also an ecofeminist, and audiovisual communicator. Join our live with her to hear about her work with Fridays for Future Bogotá/ Colombia/ International, Paxton X El Climate, and Unite for Climate Action. She started her climate leadership in 2019 and have been playing a key role in climate activism in Colombia and Latin America through various NGOs and environmental entities.

Judene Josephs is a Jamaican national and sophomore student at Howard University in Washington DC studying Economics with an interest in international development. She is a member of Revolt Incorporated, a community service organization that aims to educate youth, empower and enrich the community. Here she serves on the community service committee and events committee. She is also the secretary for TANGLES, an organization on Howard’s campus that serves to highlight the importance of self care, acceptance and empowers students on campus to embrace their natural hair. Prior to attending Howard, Judene graduated from Glenmuir High School in Clarendon, Jamaica where she was the Vice President of Model United Nations where she worked with team members to raise awareness of climate change, mental health and good health and well being on the school’s campus. She currently works as a Program Assistant with GirlsCare and served as a mentee in the inaugural class in 2021.
