A New American Dream

From seeds of freedom planted strong,

Of laws that righted ancient wrong,

The American Dream took wing to fly,

A blazing hope against the sky.

But hatred’s shadows dimmed its light,

As race and chains obscured its sight.

From whip-torn toils on bloodied grounds,

What dream could rise from such profound wounds?

The First Peoples lost their native lands,

To conquering hooves and iron brands.

For some, the dream is a blessed gift,

For others, it is just a painful rift.

Yet bias remained a stubborn yoke.

Through fiery war, the chains were broken,

The dream was branded on our soul – Life, liberty,

 the self-made whole.

Yet gender’s prison barred the way,

For half who dreamed of a freer day.

When Tulsa burned, did dreams take flight,

To find the beacon’s promised light?

This dream enshrined all souls as free,

To make their lives what they would be.

But half were caged, their hopes denied,

Restrained from dreaming, soaring wide.

Until a voice rang “I have a dream” that echoes still.

A dream of unity for all,

Where none shall fear oppression’s thrall.

So, what now of this mighty dream?

No fading wish or hollow stream.

Through modern strife, its hope lives on,

As equal justice is newly born.

The dream renewed in brilliant rays,

Of sacred rights for all our days.

Unbound by hate’s destructive nature,

Unleashed from grinding malcontent.

Where class no longer obstructs the view

Of glorious heights we can pursue.

With open eyes and open hearts,

The truest dream will do its part.

A dream awoken, burning bright,

Of hope’s unbroken inner light.
With the courage to uphold its creed,

This dawning dream will leave no one behind.

In unity its brilliant rays,
Will light the world with freedom’s blaze.

With strength to keep its fire strong,

This dream will carry us along.

Its golden beams will show the way,

To make hopes real that brighter day,

When all can claim the dream anew,

And make its longings boldly true.
