Reviving the Dream

It’s not too late to reinvigorate the American Dream for a new era. With sweeping policy reforms that rebuild and protect the middle class, reduce inequality, strengthen workers’ rights, provide access to affordable education and healthcare, and increase funding for programs that improve economic mobility, the promise of widespread opportunity could be renewed.

But achieving that revitalized Dream will require overcoming the powerful corporate forces and political ideologies that have long prioritized protecting the status quo over true equal opportunity.

Young Americans today understandably feel more pessimistic about attaining the American Dream than previous generations. Systemic obstacles and roadblocks appear more daunting than ever before. Recapturing an American Dream that speaks to the diversity of our nation and empowers ALL people to reach their full potential, regardless of background, is the key challenge ahead.

An unprecedented re-commitment to equity and democratic economic ideals may be required to resuscitate an American Dream that feels increasingly out of reach in the 21st century. Otherwise, one of the most iconic and unifying national ideals may be permanently relegated to the history books.
