OK, are you okay? (winter edition)

let’s start with the disclaimer: i do not want to offend any proud Oklahoman with this post. this is just truly yours russian experiencing weather shock constantly.

winter in oklahoma is not wintering

a couple of weeks ago ou closed because of winter weather advisory. that made me miss home as much as i never did before.

i do not think in fahrenheit, i think in celsius and you, dear reader, will have to bear with me as i am not going to change.

the coldest it was on wednesday was -11°c. when i realized that the school was closed and also because of some ice on the streets, i started hysterically giggling. the next second i noticed myself scrolling through my iphone gallery, watching photos of winters i miss. i’m going to introduce you to some of them later in this checklist post!

and now the ok winter was added to my winter collection. i would still refer to it as a simple joke. the temperature difference is insane, the amount of snow is not existing (we don’t count two days in january, ok?), i have never had to wear thermowear AND jacket and i brought tea to the class twice. this is not what i call winter.

it doesn’t give this satisfying feeling of entering warm building after cold street and sipping on the hot drink while outside drink, after class you physically can’t spend some time childlishly snowball fighting or making angels. and i have never had to make my winter favorite – mulled wine to get warm (and because the us is the country where i can’t drink alcohol because of my age)

i can complain about not doing what i am usually doing in winter forever, but there is another crime, which i must report.

it was my first time seeing soap foam “snow” being used during winter festival both at OU and in the special event brought by Coca-Cola. this is just ridiculous to me and i hope that it is just this year.

it is nothing-winter for me, as it awakes no feelings except homesickness. It’s been also +25°c and it is definitely mockery of what others call winter.

Oklahomans are quite dramatic when it comes to winter haha. My friend moved to Colorado for school, and when she comes home, I find myself telling her, ” it is too cold to do that,” and even she raises an eyebrow at me, so I can’t begin to imagine a Russian winter. I bet it is gorgeous!

I had the same thoughts! I’m from Colorado, which is also very cold in the winter (probably still not even close to Russia). That week, when we were getting school canceled, I was still wearing shorts per usual, and all of my Oklahoma/Texas friends were in shock. I’m pretty sure they thought I was trying to be cool by doing this, but for me, it was still shorts weather. I’m glad you didn’t categorize all of the United States into not being able to handle the cold!

I’ve lived in Oklahoma my whole life and winter never fails to disappoint me. I’m sorry you’re feeling homesick and our winter is such a let down. For the future, I’m not sure if you already know about any of these, but several towns including Norman have winter parades, the OKC Zoo has beautiful giant lights they put up, and Chickasha has a whole lights festival with fair rides, horse carriages, and ice skating. These small town things may not make up for the awful soap snow, but maybe they could make the season a little less gloomy. Also, your other winter pictures are beautiful!

As someone who has been born in Oklahoma my whole life, I actually very much agree with you, I’ve seen winter in other places and I always have a feeling of missing out when it comes to snowy activities. I really love the snow so I can definitely understand how Oklahoma winter is dissapointing.
