i hear all around that ai is so so so incredibly dangerous because we can all lose our jobs since it can basically replace whoever. since my mother tongue is russian, i did a small and simple experiment. i asked chatgpt to practice my russian with me as if i were a russian learner, not a native speaker. the issue arose immediately – apparently, my language was “too formal” and i should learn some informal phrases.
spoiler alert: the phrases it gave me haven’t been used in the russian-speaking community for quite a long time. if you hear someone using them, they’re very likely an old person trying to sound young.
not only were most of the “modern” words and phrases outdated, it also proposed some “untranslatable” russian words to learn. most of them, fortunately, made at least some sense, but there were two that i had never heard before – and neither of them made sense.

it was my first time hearing the first one, and according to chatgpt it means “in the middle of nowhere,” which is actually incorrect – it means something like a small, cramped chamber (think harry potter’s chamber under the stairs).
the second one is even harder to explain. let’s say… “nedo-” is a russian prefix meaning “under-” and “pere-” means “over-” and “pit’” is russian for “to drink”, so the word already contradicts itself. it’s explained as a state where you’ve drunk but not enough, and now you’re sad (what???). i even made a chart (just for fun) to show the usual drinking stages in russia, and you’ll see why this makes zero sense.
by definition, “underoverdrunk” is placed before “drunk,” but since it includes “overdrunk,” it should be at least somewhere between “drunk” and “blackout.” total nonsense.
so, overall – can chatgpt even steal a language teacher’s job? nope.
it’s a decent tool for speaking practice, but everything should be taken with a grain of salt.
