listen to this if you are bored

As I was writing my paper on the therapeutic way of listening to music for Russian expats, I realised that there are a lot of Russian songs (either in the Russian language, by a composer or an artist) out there, which you have probably already heard about. Still, there are some you might want to listen to just to touch on modern culture.

  1. The first song is called “Korobeiniki”, which is our national song about the salespeople. It is actually used as a modern Tetris game theme. (This is such a flex tbh.)
  1. The second one is called “The Flight of the Bumblebee” and was composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. It is another well-known motif.
  1. Concluding the classic/traditional music section is the piece by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, called “Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairy”
  1. Oxxxymiron – Londongrad… I do not know what to say, I just love this song
  1. Maxim – Do You Know? Someone broke your heart? This is a go-to song
  1. Victor Tsoi (initial lyrics and chords) –The Cuckoo (recreating war times but very popular)

The remastered version with more pop-like vocals by Polina Gagarina

  1. The modern folk-rock song by Melnitsa – Farewell/Goodbye
  1. Truly a folk song in modern arrangement, Pelageia – Valenki (national woollen shoes built to be warm through long, cold winters)
  1. Nina Brodskaya – January Snowstorm – one of my favourite soviet film soundtracks
  1. Bi-2 – Compromise – the first rock I have listened to and the one I dearly love
  1. Mikhail Krug – Vladimirskii Central The song attempts to reflect the experiences of a person in prison who is experiencing more than one spring in captivity. The hero rethinks the years he has lived, remembering his youth and first love. The leitmotif of the song is the famous prison “Vladimirskii Central”, which breaks the fate of people.
  1. Egor Kreed – DUBTSOVA. This is a tribute to Irina Dubtsova, singer who usually produces 2000s styled pop songs about the fate of women and love triangle you get it. And this is just an interesting mixture how the modern rap artist who is VERY popular is collaborating with older generations
  1. Noize MC – Light Stripe (good song lots of hope 10000/10)

Check out lyrics as well! https://genius.com/Genius-english-translations-noize-mc-light-stripe-english-translation-lyrics

  1. Kasta – Years of Untruth – some regime and opression discussed. Old school rap
  1. Liaze – 2003

German-Russian emigrant artist mixed songs from one very popular Soviet cartoon and rap

These are really great recs, I’ll definitely listen to some! Classical music, especially pieces that have a lot of energy, is my favorite to study to so Flight of the Bumblebees definitely caught my eye.

All the Russian music I’m familiar with is either metal or early-2000s rock so these recommendations were a nice change of pace. Melnitsa’s song is my personal favorite from this list.
