A typical, high school girl and a War devil, what is the worst that could happen? In Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man, part II follows the story of Asa Mitaka, a typical high school girl whose life changes when Yoru, also known as The War Devil, takes over one half of Asa’s brain, thus having control over her body and even consciousness, in which she controls when she wants to switch to her own consciousness (War Devil).
From such split lives, we see a double identity between these two figures as they both lead different lives, with different goals in mind. As for Yoru, her goal is to kidnap and kill Chainsaw Man, also known as Denji, while Asa has a big fat crush on Denji. These split personalities lead to a plethora of conflict between Asa and Yoru, despite sharing the same body. Despite these differences in morals, Yoru starts to warm up to human narratives because of her shared consciousness with Asa Mitaka, which makes her almost a sort of comfort towards Asa, even if Yoru is occasionally “threatening” in her ways and will often talk about “killing Asa” if she does not cooperate with her. Between a frail personality like Asa, and a bold, outrageous personality like Yoru, they (ironically enough), compliment each other in an opposite personality, which makes Asa a great muse for Yoru’s plan as she is so frail. Yoru is as if Asa’s internalized, self-deprecating thoughts were a true consciousness, that they truly, physically affected her and weren’t just psychological trauma. Yoru is essentially Asa’s worst enemy, her worst self, her intrusive thoughts mirrored onto another being, all while being used by those “thoughts.”
