Ah yes, twins. Children of multiple. Twins are a rare form of pregnancy when the mother’s fertilized egg suddenly splits into two, blessing (or potentially cursing her) with multiple children at once. Multiple children at once, that sounds awesome! You are essentially knocking two birds with one stone! Though yes, you may have more children in the same 9-month pregnancy, not only can it cause more physical complications all throughout the pregnancy, but twins also happened to have been the center of a bad omen or a sort of bad luck throughout history, present in many cultures. Having double the trouble can be seen as a curse from those above you, or a split between the angel/devil through the lenses of many cultures, and why is that? We will get into it!

Throughout history, twins were seen as people who have possessed special powers or were seen to represent a division between two concepts, or two material items, often with one twin representing the good, and the other representing the bad. For example, in Mesopotamian mythology, twins Inanna and Utu were both gods who represented the masculine and feminine parts of the sky, as they represent two parts to one whole, two souls which combine into a driving force, the sky. We also see twins as people who can heal or bring a healthy life towards people. We see twins in Christianity, Cosmos and Damian, represent this attribute as they are healers of their community. It was thought that a divine being blessed the mother and father of the twins, due to the lawfulness of the husband, thus gifting the couple a blessing during fertilization.

It can be quite difficult to fully summarize what the power of twins signify since there are many different cultures and beliefs that shape peoples viewpoints on children of multiples, but rest assured that twins are powerful, and doubling the trouble can lead to good.. or potentially bad…
