Alvin Ailey was a well known dancer who was also a choreographer and director of his dance company, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (AAADT). As an African American man, Ailey utilized his company and choreography to share the story of his family and his childhood as he witnessed and heard about growing up in America as an African American slave. Ailey also has a school affiliated with the company and it was originally for Black artists to feel comfortable in their own skin and express the hardships and oppression that came with being a person of color and now the school and company has evolved to be one of the best and well known dance companies in the country and even the world. The company has several repertoires that they keep and perform but the most famous one is the closing number choreographed by Ailey himself “Revelations” The work is performed in sections and is goes through all of the memories Ailey remembers from his African American culture. The dance include a church section where the women wear big beautiful dresses and hats and fans as Ailey recalls the church services to look like when he was a child. It includes a section with the song “Wade in the Water” to represent the hope of freedom one day. The work is truly a masterpiece and unfortunately Ailey is no longer around however he left behind a performance that will tell his story and the story of many others for many many years.
