Blog 11: TGG Influence on Fashion

The Great Gatsby greatly impacted the fashion industry with its descriptions of 1920s clothing and glamour. It has helped to understand the way fashion was back in the 1920s. If you look at old writings left by designers back then, they only say the trends were changing so fast, and young people were finding themselves through what they did buy; they couldn’t keep up.

one person who took inspiration from The Great Gatsby was Miuccia Prada. Prada had made a graphic kit wear and curve-seamed handbags that were designed based on the book. A little before the 2013 movie was made, brands like Ralph Lauren and runway homages. Prada was also one of the designers of the costumes used for the 2013 movie.

Fendi has made a drop waist bead flapper back for its 2025 spring ad campaign. As time has passes, people see Jordan Baker as the style icon of the book instead of Daisy. Jordan’s style was baggy pants, and she was independent. Jordan Baker became the icon for women in this day of age. Fashion designers such as Coco Chanel have noticed this new trend and began to make more baggy and loose-fitting clothing.

None of this would have been possibly known or designed without the help of The Great Gatsby. The style of the 1920s was unknown unless you see pictures. Even with pictures you never know if it was truly the popular style unless fashion designers were able to put it in the time capsule for clothing. Since 1920s was a time of fast changing fashion, designers never got the chance to tell what was popular at the time. Thanks to books, especially The Great Gatsby we are able to see this portion of history’s fashion sense.
