The Ballon d’Or is supposed to be a prestigious award given to what is thought to be the best soccer player in the world from that previous year. This isn’t discrediting or even saying Messi shouldn’t win, but this year was not him to win. The Polish striker Robert Lewandowski deserved to win based on the record he broke, trophies he won, and goals scored. Lewandowski broke a Bundesliga goal-scoring record of 40 goals in a season from German soccer legend Gerd Müller. The critics say that Bundesliga is an inferior league in Europe and the team that Lewandowski is on always wins, but that’s like when the warriors were unstoppable in the NBA and now credit Curry as being a great shooter. Lewandowski is a great striker, they set him up with assists and he scores the goal, it’s not his fault he makes it look easy.

While Lewandowski trophies are Bundesliga the German league, DFL Supercup a knockout tournament for the German league, the Club World Cup all the top clubs across the world who are champions compete for one superior world trophy, and individually he won the Euro golden shoe, which is awarded to the top goalscorer of any European league. Robert Lewandowski was minted with the inaugural striker of the year award this season, which is probably worse than just not giving him the Ballon d’Or.
