One thing about me is, I love a good rom-com. Movies, TV shows, short stories, articles, and novels; you name it, I will consume it. Now as a teenage girl, I do consider myself an expert on the Great American Pastime known as- the romantic comedy. And in my teenage girl expert opinion, I can confidently say that nobody is writing rom coms with as much wit and ingenuity as Emily Henry currently is. She is taking the women’s fiction world by storm, writing back-to-back-to-back bestselling novels- with no intentions of stopping.

Henry’s style of writing is entirely her own. In a genre that is filled with the same overused tropes (which I cherish and adore), she takes them and flips them on their head. Her novels don’t focus so much on the love story itself, but the women experiencing it. Henry writes complex and imperfect women to cheer on. In her novel, Book Lovers, she writes about a frigid, emotionally closed off Nora Stephens, a book editor in New York City that has a passion for writing. Henry writes this character with such vulnerability and humor. Nora is relatable to women everywhere; she’s hardworking, intelligent, and has an idiot ex-boyfriend.

This book single handedly was the inspiration behind my decision of choosing English as my major in college. Henry inspired me to follow my passion of English and literature, and to not let anyone make me feel bad about it. The way Emily Henry writes make you fall in love with reading all over again. You fall in love with the characters just as much as the story itself. In a genre that is constantly belittled and made fun of, her writing is a testimony to women everywhere that we deserve a life of our own as well as love. Emily Henry is starting a new wave of romantic comedy; where complex, strong, and resilient women are at the forefront.
