Speakers Race Coverage

For 21 days, I spent countless hours in the dimly lit, narrow tunnels of the U.S. Capitol as the House of Representatives fell into controlled chaos. Reporters from across the country lined up against the walls, shouting questions as Congress people walked by. “Who are you voting for?” bellowed through the halls, receiving unclear answers. As a correspondent for Gaylord News, and one of the only Oklahoma reporters sending coverage back to outlets in Oklahoma, I built relationships with members of the Oklahoma delegation, chased them down, and asked them questions to gain their perspective on the unprecedented speakers race. One of Oklahoma’s representatives ran for the seat making my reporting even more significant to Oklahomans.

Oklahoma Representative Kevin Hern announces he is running for speaker of the House soon after Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La) drops from the race.
Conservative House member Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) tells me she would not vote for Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK).
After 21 days, Rep. Mike Johnson wins enough votes to become the country’s next Speaker of the House ending a GOP civil war.
Days after Mike Johnson victoriously won House republican’s vote for Speaker of the House, Representative Kevin Hern from Oklahoma reveals what happened behind closed doors that kicked him off the race and gave Johnson rights to the gavel.
