The power of perception-Womans altered perspective on their own bodies.

The fashion industries perception of women has altered women’s perception of their own bodies.

It is important to note that our perceptions are strongly influenced by our surroundings. What we are told, presented, and do, can all have an effect on our own perceptions in some way.

However, the effects of perception can be harmful and in extreme cases dehumanize. What I have learned and gather within this class is that society as a whole has a pre-existing set of expectations that we are expected to conform to. We respond to our environments which is why perception is so powerful.

For example, when we look at the idealized body image in media for women. We can see the power full impacts the social comparison among women and it’s harm on self image.

Not the best artist but a simple summary image

Majority of the blame can be made at the fashion industry. The fashion industry is known to exclude the fact that every human is completely different especially when it comes to body types. A thin and unhealthy body shape has been the front cover of magazines and runways for sometime. The advertisement of what women should be or are deemed as most desirable gives those who witness it a complex.

Idealizing something that is unachievable is irrational. Majority of women do abide by their perceptions of what the fashion industry has created for them to follow. Becoming a consumer to the fashion industry’s mannequins.

We need to take a look at the process of objectification. This term refers to the tendency to treat an individual not as a person with emotions and thoughts, but as a physical being. In most cases women are shown in a hyper-sexualized manner.

Because of the fashion industry’s exploitation of women’s bodies self-esteem of women has become largely dependent on how “sexy” one looks rather than by how inwardly attractive they are.

Looking at the image I have drawn. It presents a scribble image of a focused women following the model being controlled by a mysterious figure similar to a puppet. The woman shows having black finger tips which really holds no significance for the argument. The image can be interpreted in many different ways depending on how you view it. For my interpretation I’ve decided to hopefully illustrate the power that the fashion industry has over the perception of women’s bodies. In addition to that it also shows how the fashion industry influences the behavior of women by what they witness from them as well.

I’ve expanded on the detrimental impact the fashion industry has had upon women’s self image but on a positive note we can begin to thinking about the person behind the model can help you understand that persons humanity. This could be help our own humanity as well.
