After watching the “Black Swan” I realized just how serious these performances can be for someone. The drastic measures that have to be made in order for someone to have the proper qualities to take a leading role for just a dance. The dancing in ballet can be described as a beautiful tragedy. The standards that ballerinas have to meet is extreme and detrimental to their health. To present what is presumed as a beautiful performance is just makeup to cover up the blemishes of these ballerinas. The majority of young dancers suffer from anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorders. These health problems go on to effect their lives just for an obtainment of a unrealistic body type. The film “Black Swan” highlights these emotional and physical pressures within the ballet world.

To represent the double or duality of the film is the representation of the mirror. Dancers relation with mirrors is detrimental to their dancing. They watch themselves practice for hours and even pick themselves apart. The reflection within the mirror is an entirely different person. The main character within “Black Swan” begins to act differently than her normal self. As time progresses Nina (the main character) grows to be aggressive and unsettling which starts a fight in the dressing room before the performance of the being the Black Swan and says through gritted teeth, “Its my turn.” after stabbing the one dancer who was set to perform the black swan. Completely transforming herself into the performing character entirely. She has become the black swan.
