Realism is a concept that is used throughout gaming to refer to many aspects of the industry, from the graphics to the storyline, and in reference to art style and characters. The quality of the graphics and the art style the developers chose to use are extremely important in making a game. Which begs the question is realism in video games necessary?
In my honest opinion, video games are not meant to be realistic. I mean they are called video GAMES for a reason right. I do believe that some aspect of realism in terms of the art and graphics do make games more appealing. However, Realism has been added to the list in making modern games that has created a lot of problems. For me the point of video games is the escape from my day-to-day life that is mundane, but with the new component of realism in newer games it has now made video games another time-consuming grind. Sometimes these add-ons of realism can be silly and fun or just out right make the game less enjoyable and much more of a pointless grind.
Video game character are now being created similarly to movies to help become more realistic. Characters faces are becoming closer to human now with much more clearly seen freckles and pores. Food and water are now a necessary item to have in video games for these realistic characters and with fires and explosions being extremely realistic.

One terrifying but interesting detail that has been made in modern games is the realistic effects on killing or murdering people. The deaths of people and shooting people are pushing the line of being too real. In conclusion, realism is important, but it needs to be handled correctly. A game shouldn’t be dismissed purely because it isn’t realistic enough.
