This semester I served as treasurer to the University of Oklahoma’s Model United Nations. It is my second semester to be a part of Model United Nations and I’ve enjoyed being on the executive team. It has been an interesting semester of learning how to book rooms, order catering, plan a budget, and how to request funding.
The meetings this semester were a success. We introduced several new members into MUN and were able to bring some of them along to our conference in Arkansas. It was exciting getting to help them prepare.
We started the semester with some sillier simulations (ex: what is the best sport?) in order to help the new members get used to the flow as well as teaching in a laid-back environment things like how to make motions, how to ask to be added to the speaker’s list, how to set speaking and question time, how to enter unmoderated caucus and what to do during that time. Each semester we also do a more in-depth presentation on terms and motion names.
There are some things I hope for us to focus on more when coaching new people in the future. One being how to write draft resolutions. In the aforementioned presentation, we go over the general build of a paper, but we explain very little on what a delegation should really want in a paper. In a similar vein, we don’t explain adequately how to come up with a plan you hope to accomplish within the conference.
This semester was still an incredible success and I am excited to build upon it next year!
