- This book analyzes how the novel has stayed relevant throughout decades and withstood the criticism that came with each decade. Each claim made by Beuka is followed with evidence from supporting sources. Robert claims “of particular note is the sustained interest in the historicity of the text, and particularly how it responded to the discourses of its own moment-from persuasive notions about race, gender, and national identity discussed in the popular magazines to the imagery offered in popular music and entertainment” (Beuka, 1). This is important to include as this is the overall focus of my research paper. I want to find out how, throughout the interpretations provided by many pop culture references, the novel has not fallen to the criticism and false claims made in these references.

- This source talks about the importance of music for The Great Gatsby and how Fitzgerald alluded to different songs throughout the novel. She supports this idea of Fitzgerald’s fascination for music by including that Fitzgerald wrote a musical named The Vegetable after his. Adams provides quotes from Anthony Berret’s book, Music in theWorks of F.Scott Fitzgerald; Unheard Melodies, throughout the review to support her personal claims. Adams reiterates that this book shows “how rewarding such musical excavation can be when combined with a cultural studies approach.” Now this source is not directly related to my argument, but I feel that it can easily support certain assertions throughout my paper as I believe that music has had one of the biggest influences on the novels relevance today.

- This is a 2 part that article provides multiple examples of The Great Gatsby references in Taylor Swift songs. It creates a parallel between Fitzgerald’s wife, Zelda, and Daisy Buchanan throughout the interpretations of Taylor Swift songs. I really liked this article as it provides a different perspective for some of the songs I have already analyzed. This article also speaks about the intentionality of Taylor’s music videos and verses in relation to the novel. The article states that a few of the songs “are performed on top of a massive water fountain in front of a backdrop of a mansion that looks suspiciously like those of the various live-action adaptations of The Great Gatsby.” I think that this source will be very useful in supporting my argument for the research paper as I can drawn in different interpretations of the references.

- This article answers questions on how the soundtrack was chosen for the Great Gatsby film by Baz Luhrmann. This soundtrack includes a combination of very popular modern pop songs and jazz songs to appeal to all audiences. The article mentions how incorporating jazz into the film was crucial in maintaining the Fitzgerald’s original theme. Craig Armstrong, Luhrmann’s collaborator, states “what Baz likes to do is fuse the popular songs and the score so there’s a seamless transition.” This is important as it shows his creative process in bringing this film to life. I think this will be a great source to use for my paper as I can provide supporting examples of other songs that reference The Great Gatsby.

- Annotation:
- This magazine entry goes into detail about Taylor Swift’s fixation on The Great Gatsby. It explains how Taylor’s Reputation album expresses numerous themes from the novel and provides examples of these references with explanations. It also talks about how aside from song references Taylor recreated an iconic Mia Farrow look for the 2014 People Magazine Cover. Withers writes that similar to Gatsby “Swift has always liked large parties (they’re so intimate), and it often seems the entire point of them is to get noticed-getting attention was likewise the motivation behind Gatsby’s parties, who only bought his Long Island mansion because it was across the bay from Daisy’s.” These comparisons I feel will provide great support to my argument.

- This article provides an overall review of the novel’s success. It also includes information about the Baz Lhurmann film adaptation. The main thing I will be using from this article is a quote Fitzgerald wrote in a letter to his editor. The quote reads “Of all the reviews, even the most enthusiastic, not one had the slightest idea what the book was about.” This quote is important because it shows that the novel has a deeper meaning so I plan to include this in my introduction as supporting evidence.

- This article is an interview of Taylor Swift from Vogue Magazine. It provides information about her life and her career. The most important piece from this interview is Taylor’s answer when asked about her favorite author in which she responds F. Scott Fitzgerald. She quotes ““beauty and eloquence of his language itself. His writing is more poet and songwriter in nature than novelist.” This is good supporting evidence for me to have to create my argument as it shows where her inspiration for her writing style came from.

- Annotation:
- This article creates a comparison between Taylor Swift’s songs and other literature works aside from Great Gatsby. The writer of this article starts by explaining Taylor’s writing style where she states “The complexity in the works she references start out like a freshman English class — simple narratives, likable characters, and clear enemies — while some of her later albums acknowledge literature with more controversial and complex themes.” This is a good segway as many of the literature pieces are covered in English class. But it shows how because of her references, there might be a greater desire to read these books. It includes references of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” and the children’s book “Alice in Wonderland.” These are important comparisons to include in my paper as they will support my counterargument of the reverse influence Taylor has on literature.
