The impact Joker had on the public was immeasurable as stated before, the film is the highest grossing rated R movie of all time, earning $1,074,251,311. In just the first day the trailer was announced, it completely took over Twitter. The final trailer on Twitter alone, wrapped in over one million views in just the first hour of its release (Coleman 2019).
The film also had 122 award wins and 239 nominations to show its success. The most notable is of the film’s two Oscar wins and nine nominations. The awards were for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Score) by Hildur Guðnadóttir.
The way the film was perceived by the public was controversial, especially by critics. The film has just a 68% tomato Meter score with over 500 reviews split down the middle if the film did overall more harm than good with some people believing that it was “glorifying” the violence and character of Arthur Fleck/Joker (Severson 2019).
One of the most popular ways the film affected social media culture is with its memes and trends. Many users of apps would either post a scene of the movie with a caption used to reference something they thought funny or create comedy images with texts over it as both ways were used for entertainment. On TikTok, the hashtag joker2019 has over 145 million views as of October 10, 2020, with these trends primarily on it with also sharing their favorite moments of the film.
