Verses 16 through 20 describe the Lord’s arrival on the third day, showing himself to the Israelites and Moses. He does this in six different ways; lightning, thunder, a thick cloud, the sound of the trumpet, smoke, and fire. The lightning and thunder were used in the same way as in the bible, it is to show the power of God. The thick cloud shows his direct presence as he said he would show up in a dark cloud earlier in the text and clouds are in the sky which is the separation between the earth and the heavens. The sound of the trumpet was said to cause the people to tremble in fear, possibly God hoping they wouldn’t try him. A second reason why I believe the people trembled in fear is that someone possibly did what the Lord said for them to do as we know from previous lectures the Israelites were defiant in the Lord causing them to take forty years before theft would arrive to the promised land. A third possibility why they trembled is simply because they do not understand as most mortals could not comprehend the power of the Lord. Moses would call everyone then to the barrier of Mount Sinai to meet God, where they would find that the base of the mountain was in smoke from a fire, showing his presence. Using all of these different things like fire, lightning, smoke, and thunder, implies that the Lord has a connection with nature, making him appear as pantheistic. Lastly, the sound of the trumpet longing growing louder and louder was actually God as then Moses would speak and God would call him to meet him at the top of Mount Sinai, implying that the trumpet was him. The reason why God wanted him to go to the top of the mountain rather than just where Moses currently is because so that he could be in the absolute presence of God, showing again the theme of non-omnipresent.
