Hello! I am Lauren Simpkins, a dedicated, hardworking, outgoing, confident, intelligent, and versatile public relations practitioner. I utilize creative thinking and effective communication to improve the sports industry.
I am a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma studying public relations, Spanish, and digital marketing. I am originally from St. Louis, Missouri, where I attended Nerinx Hall High School (Go Markers!). I am Sooner born and Sooner bred. My mom and dad met and became best friends during their sophomore year at OU. I grew up coming to homecoming weekend for OU and rooting for the Sooners. When choosing a college, all signs pointed to the University of Oklahoma. I decided to major in public relations after taking the “finding your major” quiz. When I arrived at OU, I knew I was in the right place. I am currently majoring in public relations, along with a double minor in Spanish and digital marketing.
It was at my high school that I decided that I wanted to study public relations and continue my Spanish education. I served as an ambassador for my high school, filmed admissions videos, recruited prospective students to apply to my high school, and inspired donors to fund the building of our STEM wing with my story. I loved making my high school look good, and I want to continue doing so at Gaylord.
Being at Gaylord has allowed me to push myself out of my comfort zone when it comes to writing, exploring my creative passions, and more. My courses have taught me the importance of integrity, love, and other valuable morals. I have gained professional skills from the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), Gameday U, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, and Sports Girls Club. Additionally, my recent trip to New York, where I connected with professionals who worked at agencies, with the New York Mets and the NBA, taught me leadership and networking skills that I will use for the rest of my professional career.
Being a resident advisor has helped me acquire skills that prepare me for the professional world. I have had to tap into my creative senses when designing posters for floor events, bulletin boards, and tackling a crisis. I work with design software such as Adobe Express, Canva, and After Effects. I have learned how to engage with online and in-person audiences to promote a brand and increase brand awareness.
