“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” is an adventure movie that starts when a group of teens that were put in detention together find an old video game in the school’s junk and decide to play it. The group is sucked into the video game, and they spawn in the Jumanji world as the avatars they picked. This movie is an addition/spin-off to the original “Jumanji” that was made in 1995, not a continuation, so you can watch “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” without having seen the original and not miss anything.
I really like this movie because it’s funny, has good characters, and neat action scenes. The older actors do a great job of acting like their teen counterparts. I’ve seen it several times, and it’s an easy movie to follow.
This movie relates to the course because the characters are doubles: the real-life teens and their video game avatars. When the teens are sucked into the video games, the actors change to fit the avatars the teens picked out, so each character has two actors. The avatars have special names, inventory, weaknesses, and skills separate from the teens.
The movie also relates to uncanny doubles because the teens feel uncanny in their new bodies. They have different physiques and anatomy, and one girl even changed genders into her avatar. The teens struggle to adjust to their new bodies and the strengths and weaknesses that come with it. In the beginning, they also feel uncanny interacting with one another since they have new bodies, so they feel like they are interacting with strangers. I think this could be a form of body dysmorphia.
