The Mona Lisa is the best known, most visited, and overall, one of the most famous pieces of artwork in the entire world. Today it is worth about one hundred million dollars and is locked behind bullet proof glass. After centuries of being held at the Palace of Fontainebleau, it is now held in the Louvre Museum in Paris and recognized as a symbol of great artistic achievement. The painting depicts a woman with a subtle smile set against a dim landscape. Even though her face is so world renown, many do not know who she is. The portrait is believed to be painted of Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy merchant from Florence. Her husband asked Da Vinci to paint her a portrait to celebrate the birth of their second son, Andrea. Then, history was made.
The “Mona Lisa” is sometimes considered a double because of its odd nature. Her smile is the biggest reason, it can look happy or sad depending on how you see it, like there are two emotions at once. The background also looks like there are two sides. The background on the bottom of the painting looks calm and peaceful while the top looks windy and stormy. This could represent the stormy emotions in her head, while she keeps her appearance calm and put together. Maybe the famous painting represents two women or maybe it just is Lisa del Giocondo feeling two emotions. It’s like the Mona Lisa is hiding two things at the same time, two feelings, two views, and maybe even two identities. Many conspiracies can come from this painting and its history, but there is no doubt that it is a double.
