Myth to Meme Blog Week 4: Gold

My favorite genre of music is hip hop or rap. The artist nowadays usually raps about drugs, money and success. However, if you think about the lyrics, you’ll tend to see a pattern. I ask myself what really signifies success in life. The pattern I see is the use of jewelry which the most common material of success is gold. Gold is a very precious item that many desire in life. Who wouldn’t want a gold watch or gold chain/necklace?  In history gold symbolizes wealth and luxury. If we look at how gold is perceived in the Great Gatsby, we see that gold is used in the exact same way. As a way to reel in Daisy he wears gold when he meets her. Yet he fails so then you can question if gold is really a savior of man or just a material that means nothing but fake fantasies and dreams? If all the gold Gatsby had could give him what he really wanted then daisy would be with him, however, this isn’t the case. So, if we look at the celebrities today and look at some the mishaps that happen with celebrities such as Demi Lovato, Jim Carey, and much more; we can see that money and fame isn’t everything. More questions pop up as we think was Fitzgerald trying to tell us how fame will be our downfall as we believe in a dream that doesn’t give you the full happiness of life. Who’s to tell that people are happy when they hide behind gold?
